I started reading in my bedroom as a child so I did not have to go outside to face the neighborhood bullies. (At school I could not avoid them.)
Unfortunately, my favorite books were romance novels, a huge hook for love addicts.
I stopped reading when I graduated from college and got my teaching credential. I wanted a break.
When I joined AA in 1982 someone gave me a copy of The Road Less Traveled. From then on I was hooked on self-help books.
Books, and the wisdom in them, have changed my life. It has been my life's work to summarize for people, who can't or don't want to read, the knowledge I have found in books I break things into manageable pieces so everyone can "get it." I get criticized a lot for not being academic enough but that is not my calling. I am at heart a poet and writing prose, to me, is like writing a song would be to a song writer.
I still read when I have time or something groundbreaking comes out. No novels, although I have nothing against them. I just love to learn and then teach what I have learned.
This board is my latest attempt at teaching people in simplistic terms. Every post is a summation of a book somewhere.
With the audio book there is no excuse not to learn from books. Reach out to the universe and get your library card.

Susan, this book was a tremendous help to me. It explains so much of the therapuetic relationship-- transference, counter-transference and how a client regards his/her therapist while in session---even out of session.. It's such a good read and gives it from a client's perspective

lomew8, please read the board rules and introduce yourself first at Newcomer's Thread before you try to find help for someone else like your friend. Thank you.
